Connections: Yoga to Yoda

Yoga

In Indian philosophy, yoga is a set of practices of the body along with the mind, which aims to control the body and the wish to overcome the cycle of reincarnation and later attain nirvana. These ideas became more known in the West during the 19th century by anthropologists and Orientalists, one of them was  …

Emile Burnouf

Burnouf (1821-1907) has a bit sinister legacy . Before him, the word “Aryan” referred to the Indo-Aryan people who founded Hinduism. Burnouf called all white”Aryans” and proposed the swastika (traditional Hindu symbol meaning good luck and equilibrium) as the main emblem of this “master race”, which later became the symbol of …

Nazism

This racist ideology came to take over Germany in the 30’s and applied for the conquest  of a new “living space” for the “Aryans.” People of all kinds moved from one way or another against the Nazis, including one Dutch Puppetier called Frances Oznowicz, who fought along the British in World War II. He had a son during the war …

Frank Oz

After the European destruction due to the war, his family moved for the USA. Frank inherited his father’s talent for puppets, having tremendous success in The Muppets – where I created the characters of Miss Piggy and Fozzy. One year later, Oz was invited to be part of another project: Star Wars, where he created, manipulated and played the voice of …

Yoda

The different way of speaking of Yoda was Oz’s creation who, until now, dubs the character’s voice. In Star Wars, Yoda is portrayed as a 900 years old Master Jedi  and is the guardian of an ancient philosophy – which has usurped some elements of yoga – which its antagonistic representation is the “dark side of force”, as does the philosophy India.
